Birketts strengthens Shipping and International Trade Team with senior appointment

Paul Haworth has joined the specialist Shipping and International Trade Team as a Legal Director at top 100 law firm Birketts.

Prior to joining Birketts, Paul was a Master Mariner who sailed as Captain on various DP Class 2 vessels engaged in dive support and offshore construction before coming ashore and qualifying as a solicitor in 2009. Paul subsequently became a Partner at a niche shipping law firm in London and is experienced in all aspects of shipping law. He has a particular specialism in collisions, groundings and salvages and is experienced in ‘dry’ charterparty disputes.

Commenting on his appointment, Paul said: “Birketts is a highly respected law firm in the shipping and maritime sector. The Shipping and International Trade Team has built an excellent reputation with a global client base. Moving from the City has meant that I can work with an impressive portfolio of UK-based and overseas clients, who will benefit from me being outside London as much as I will.”

Head of Birketts’ Shipping and International Trade Team, Nicholas Woo, added: “The addition of such a highly qualified senior appointment will help ensure that the team continues to offer our clients a premier legal offering. Paul provides advice on all aspects of international trade and maritime law and he is one of only a handful of London shipping lawyers to have sailed as a Captain and to be legally qualified. We continue to strengthen our market share in the sector, offering high quality work at a price that is very competitive in comparison to London firms.”

Nick added: “We are always interested in hearing from talented, high-quality candidates that are keen to develop their career and practice in Suffolk.”

Paul is based at the firm’s Ipswich office.
