The future is digital – TIPC raising operational efficiencies across its port group

To help effectively meet the myriad challenges facing port operations in the second decade of the 21st century, the Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) has been pursuing strategic measures focused on port digitalisation, streamlining vessel arrival and departure operations, integrating the management of wharf and cargo handling operations, implementing and expanding smart port capabilities, and partnering with port businesses to further refine the service experience at TIPC ports.

Customer service-focused digital services driving a digital and sustainable future

Taking its cue from core client service needs, TIPC is leveraging IoT sensors, big data analysis, and cutting-edge smart tech to improve vessel safety, monitor vessel berthing status in real-time, raise cargo transport efficiencies, and integrate port-wide operations management information to improve the quality and impact of port services. Moreover, to help achieve TIPC sustainability objectives, smart energy management is being implemented at all seven of TIPC’s international commercial ports, enabling the real-time monitoring and optimisation of energy and power systems to make energy management a key contributor to TIPC port sustainability.

Cross-disciplinary partnerships accelerate digital transformation, unleash smart port potential

To help foster long-term prosperity within the port business community, TIPC is promoting the Port Industry Digital Transformation Incentive Program to encourage port businesses to adopt and utilise innovative digital service solutions as well as making its ports available as testing grounds for innovative new port-related technology applications. TIPC is making every effort to walk in step with the ICT sector to pioneer the effective implementation of key new tech applications.

The 5G Smart Port 2.0 and Innovative Tourism Applications program launched by TIPC in partnership with Taiwan’s largest telecommunication services provider earned the ITS-Taiwan Industry Innovation Award in 2024 for its development of an unmanned surface vessel (USV) integrated with AIoT and IoT functionalities designed to detect and clean debris and oil contaminants from port water surfaces as well as to continuously monitor port water depths. This USV has been integral in improving vessel navigation safety within TIPC ports and enhancing port operating environments.

Data sharing project raises service effectiveness and streamlines the sharing of critical data among port businesses

The ability to manage and apply data is an increasingly important factor affecting the long-term success and sustainability of smart port operations. With this in mind, TIPC ports continue to prioritise the development and strategic expansion of port community systems (PCS). These PCS monitor and process vessel arrival / departure, cargo transport, and other critical information, sharing these in real-time via an online platform to help related port businesses seamlessly schedule and provide essential services. The result is a better service experience for port shipping clients and enhanced port operational effectiveness.

Strengthening smart port capabilities is a key strategic focus of TIPC. We are continuing to enhance port digital services as well as fully leverage big-data analysis, AI applications, and cloud technologies to create an optimally digital, low-carbon, and sustainable future for TIPC ports in close cooperation with our port business partners.
