Wilson appoints Norwegian Greentech to six bulker newbuilds

Dry cargo shipping group Wilson has chosen Norwegian Greentech to deliver the ballast water treatment systems to six 3,800dwt newbuild bulkers that are being constructed at Udupi Cochin Shipyard in India.

Under the contract, Norwegian Greentech will supply its energy efficient ballast water treatment system (BWTS) to the six newbuilds. The company has developed an efficient treatment method that combines UV and filters.

The award includes options to deliver the BWTS system to eight additional bulker newbuilds that Wilson is building at Udupi Cochin Shipyard.

“We have previously delivered our BWTS to more than 100 Wilson vessels, but we have to work hard every time to prove that we are worthy of earning a new contract,” said Børge Gjelseth, SVP Commercial at Norwegian Greentech.

Wilson has previously announced that the newbuilds will be designed to adapt to a wide range of fuel and energy types and to meet and surpass environmental standards required in today’s shipping industry. The vessels will be equipped with energy-efficient machinery, optimised hull design and systems for optimal resource utilisation and fuel savings.

“Low power consumption and effective utilisation of available space is particularly important for small cargo vessels, where available space equals potential revenue,” added Mr Gjelseth. “Our chemical-free BWTS has a highly compact design, which is ideal for small engine or pump rooms. It is also very energy efficient and thereby suitable for smaller cargo vessels that typically have less on-board power available.”

Gjelseth also highlights that all BWTS will be equipped with functionalities for remote access and assistance, which is useful for cargo vessels that aim to spend as little time in port as possible.

Norwegian Greentech will manufacture the ballast water treatment systems at its headquarters in Fosnavåg, Norway, and deliver them to Udupi Cochin Shipyard. The company has not disclosed the value of the contract.

Norwegian Greentech is a supplier of ballast water treatment systems and other systems for purification of water for use in the aquaculture industry and in the maritime sector. The company is a subsidiary of HAV Group ASA, which is listed on Euronext Growth in Oslo, Norway.

Bergen-based shipowner and operator Wilson has a fleet of over 130 ships ranging in size from 1,500 to 8,500dwt.
